Drow
Drow society was matriarchal, militaristic, and heavily influenced by religion. Their city-states were formed in huge underground caverns but frequently at war with one another. These cities were ruled by the most powerful of the families (or houses) and although the power of the many families changed often, the top few usually remained stable.[11] Males who hoped to find any place of power in society often resorted to ends as treacherous as the women that ruled the drow, hoping to perhaps win a coveted place as the mate of a powerful matron mother.[16]

It would be easy to imagine that drow females, by comparison, had it much easier but this was an illusion and their prestigious position within society came at a high cost. In fact, the teachings of Lolth and the drive to gain more power over others made competition between female drow, particularly those who belonged to powerful houses, violently competitive in a way that males did not have to cope with. Matters were even worse for those who sought power through venues outside of Lolth's church, where the females had to compete not only with one another but with resentful and oppressed males.[17]

Drow were arrogant, ambitious, sadistic, treacherous and hedonistic. From birth, drow were taught they were superior to other races and should crush those beneath them. Children who resisted and showed kindness or love were brutally punished, so as to drive the instinct for cruelty into them.[16] They valued advancement over their peers more than anything else, pulling down their superiors and crushing their inferiors. This didn't mean they treated all of their peers with disdain, however. Drow were not barbaric and appreciated a sense of subtlety and thus drow were typically courteous and urbane, even to their most hated rivals.[citation needed]

Cities were structured around the most powerful families taking the best areas, leaving the other drow to take whatever land they could. The focus of a city was often the temple of Lolth and this was often in the grounds of the ruling family. Magical items that emitted faerie fire adorning buildings were a sign of prosperity. Rhe garrison and some of the slaves, as well as rothé farms, were kept outside the city.[11]

Often a city would seek to forge an alliance with a powerful Underdark creature like a deep dragon or a beholder so that they could gain extra protection.[11]

Although many drow sought to regain the surface world that they felt was taken from them unjustly, some had become so used to life in the Underdark that they would prefer to make the best of this realm and had no interest in the surface.[10]

The drow who did choose to live on the surface did not form any kind of organized society and instead lived as hermits and outcasts. They would interact with other societies when they needed to, but not through choice.[11]

Drow liked to eat animals that were still living because they believed the meat had a better flavor.[18]

Mind Flayers
The mind flayer, also called the illithid, is an evil and sadistic being, humanoid in appearance, but with a four-tentacled octopus-like head. These beings are feared throughout the Underdark for their telepathic abilities and usually are not without two or more slaves, mentally bound, to each individual mind flayer. Although they cooperate to achieve a goal, they will back away at the first sign that it is not something that will be self-profitable. They are capable of speaking Undercommon, but prefer telepathic communication and will attempt to mentally dominate any non-slave, non-illithid they meet.[1] Some theorized mind flayers to be aliens from the future (as stated in The Sargmne Prophecies)[2], who had come back in time to save their species from extinction. Another tale is that they are cursed inbred mutant offspring of humans from a distant world. [3] However, more convincing evidence points to a more sinister origin in the Far Realm. They feed on the brains of sentient creatures and are thus feared. Their natural psionic abilities also make them respected in the eyes of the drow, beholders, duergar, and the other dominant races of the Underdark.[4]

House Oblodra
House Oblodra is a deceased drow house of Menzoberranzan. House Oblodra was gifted in the rare art of psionics. The matron of House Oblodra used this advantage, during the Time of Troubles, by attacking other houses. Though it fell during the years 1358 DR - 1359 DR and was defeated by House Baenre and by the help of an avatar of Lolth.

Kimmuriel Oblodra was a powerful psionicist of Menzoberranzan and the last known survivor of House Oblodra.[1] He often served as the de facto leader of Bregan D'aerthe while Jarlaxle romped around the surface world.[2] [3]

Bregan D'aerthe was an elite drow mercenary and later mercantile group founded and led by Jarlaxle Baenre, primarily based in Menzoberranzan in the Underdark.[1]

In 1466 DR, Bregan D'aerthe, at the bequest of Jarlaxle, assaulted Draygo Quick's compound in Gloomwrought in the Shadowfell to free his prisoners: Drizzt Do'Urden and the petrified Dahlia Sin'felle and Artemis Entreri.[13] In 1469 DR, Draygo Quick was continuing to work with Bregan D'aerthe; Kimmuriel Oblodra had agreed to share information he gathered from working with the illithids in return for forgiveness for the assault on Quick's home.[14]

In 1484 DR, Bregan D'aerthe was hired by Matron Mother Quenthel Baenre to clean up House Do'Urden in Menzoberranzan, as well as to make up the garrison for that house. For a brief time, two-thirds of the members of Bregan D'aerthe were serving in the garrison, until Jarlaxle began swapping them out and sending them back to Luskan. Jarlaxle was assigned the title of Captain of the Guard, although he bribed Gromph Baenre with psionics lessons from Kimmuriel to get out of his duties and escape the city.[15][16]

However, by 1484 DR, with Kimmuriel away at an illithids' hive, arlaxle was once again seen as an equal co-leader with Kimmuriel.[26]
