PostSubject: Back in Phandalin...   June 2nd 2015, 7:16 am

Life has been relatively quite in the small, but growing, village of Phandalin. Lander the Lucky continues his duties of training recruits and the town guard, and building additional fortifications, like watch towers. There are now enough towers between the town and the mine that each tower can see the next. The route is much more prepared and protected.

The growth of Phandalin, and it's apparent prosperity has not gone unnoticed. Several supply caravans, or merchants have been hit by bandits on the Triboar Trail. News reports also continue to come in about dragon attacks along the Sword Coast. The Drow have not attacked again, but those going to and from the mines have reported the feeling of being watched on the trail. The new towers were partly in response to those reports.

Reports have also come in about the major cities or political bodies gathering armies. This is confirmed when two people show up from Neverwinter with a personal guard. They seek out Sildar Hallwinter who immediately summons Lander to the town hall.

Upon arrival Lander is introduced to a captain in the Neverwinter Army, and the Chief Tax Collector for this area. Sildar tells Lander that they are here to collect taxes, equivilant to 10% of the towns gold, and to draft young men ages 15-30 in fighting condition for a coming war to save the city, and potentially the whole Sword Coast.

OOC: Is this homebrew, or something from one of the published campaigns?

ooc: Bit of both. Mostly a side effect of the dragon cult getting preety big in HotDQ and RoT. Its in preparation for the big fight.

This is my interpretation of the effects of HotDQ and future setup for CoW.

Sildar is distressed thinking that Phandalin was on their own given the state of affairs in Neverwinter. The city is still recovering from a nearby volcanis eruption, and Thundertree is still basically in ruins. However, whatever is happening along the Sword Coast has the Lords, and rulers completely stressed out.

In addition Sildar has been contacted by the Harpers, and the Emerald Enclave, as well as the Order of the Gauntlet looking for aid and support. He has been able to do very little as he follows Ulric's last orders and Lander's current input.

He turns now to Lander for more immediate feedback and guidance.

Ooc: So before I do this, I'm going to address what lander has been up to over the past few months.

The first few weeks were filled with fun. While the parties' away the mice will play right? Much fun was had exchanging pranks with droop, visiting k'larq as he "Got to know" the locals, and many nights at the bar. But after the first week or two, at Sildar's insisting, he decided to study some books on tactics. And on how to run a town. And how to read. After a few weeks of tough studying, only interupted by playing every night at the tavern, he has become much more competent on the workings of the world around him, instead of becoming a carefree bard. However, his personality still proceeds him, and although he now realizes how serious his job is, he still tries to keep his spirits, the spirits of those surrounding him, and the spirits in everyone's cups high.

The Guard towers came after a few random attacks on the trail: Not just drow, but also boars, traveling giants, earthen spirits, and other hostile beasts. Although most traveling the trail were escorted by armored guards, those who could not afford this luxury demanded that the remaining representative of the iron suns protect them. Although he would like to think that he could stand true and save the day, lander knew he had to find a smarter solution. He talked with robin (who was a bit busy fighting beholders at the moment), and traveled to Neverwinter to seek guidance from the people there. There, he received the plans for guard towers that could be easily built, and learned about the spell Fabricate. He immediately made his way back to K'larq, who saw the plans and said they should get to work.

Using the spell was easy. The wood was difficult to acquire, but lander found a clever way of convincing many of the young men in the town to cut down trees for him. He had k'larq, with his help, create a chalice that, once a day, could fill up with fine liqueur. Then he went down to the tavern and posted his challenge: Whoever could bring him the most wood within 2 weeks would win the chalice: no second prize, no refunds. Tons of timber came rolling in by the day, and trees were quickly converted into guard towers, weaponry, and other defensive items. The winner of the contest, a barbarian who had gone into a rage and cleared an entire forest, enjoyed getting drunk off his chalice everyday at the bar: it wasn't very much alcohol, but it was free.

The towers were quickly constructed, and before long the entirety of the trail was dotted with guard towers, each with the Iron suns symbol on the outside, and lander's house symbol (Designed by droop as a reward for a bet, in which lander had to run naked through town, unseen) facing inward, to everyone who traveled the trail. Because of this, people began to see lander less as a drunken fool, and more as a drunken fool who can get things done, even in the absence of commanders like Berric. This is the reason Sildar would even go to lander for help in the first place.

At the news, lander leaves the study (once his performance room, half the room is now split into a makeshift study, complete with stack of books, and coaster for holding his "Morning drink," usually coffee) and tells Droop to send any messengers to the town hall.

He throws open the doors, greeting the captain warmly, and getting a less than warm greeting in return. At the captain's request, lander begins to chuckle. "My dear friend, it is so kind of you to offer to protect us, but i assure you the people of Phandalan are more than capable of protecting themselves."

A stern voices hammers out a reply. "You are mistaken. We are not here to post a guard here. We are here to gain bodies to post a larger guard elsewhere, and bolster our armies." He crosses his large beefy arms. "This is not a negotiation."

"Ave, Lander, morituri te salutamus"

Lander's faithful 15-30 years olds wishing him goodbye as they leave to
boldly go where no man has gone before

Occ: OH GOD ALL THE RED SHIRTS.

IC: Lander's carefree face goes stern. "Bodies? Its as if you're already sentencing these men to death. How many men do you require?"

The military man responds in a very non-emotional way. "We need all the bodies you can spare. We'll determine how many after we've seen your stock. And, yes, I am using words like bodies and stock. Please, make no mistake, this is a war we are preparing for and I've been tasked with gathering resources not personalities and emotions. There are evils in this world you may not be familiar with, but they are growing in number and strength enough that even the best amongst us might falter."

He looks saddened for a quick second. "I take no pleasure in leading young men to an early grave, so for my own sanity I need to think about them more as objects than fathers and sons."
